Dr. Mona Deerwester serves as the head of dermatopathology at Pacific Dermatology Institute, where she specializes in caring for skin diseases in adults and children. As a double board-certified dermatopathologist and anatomic pathologist, she excels in diagnosing skin conditions by examining biopsy samples under the microscope. Her expertise covers a wide range of medical dermatological conditions, including skin cancer, rashes, psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, and various other acute and chronic skin issues. Dr. Deerwester is well-equipped to provide treatments, perform small procedures, and conduct routine skin checks to monitor her patients' health.
Originally from Vancouver, Canada, Dr. Deerwester completed her undergraduate studies at UBC, earning a Bachelors of Science with honors in Physiology. She continued her academic journey at UBC, pursuing a Masters degree in Physiology and Genetics. Throughout her time at UBC, she received several accolades including induction into the Golden Key Honour Society for Academic Excellence and the UBC Leadership Award. She was also recognized with the Outstanding Achievement Award and the Chancellor Award.
Following medical school, Dr. Deerwester underwent a residency in Anatomic Pathology at NYU Langone Long Island School of Medicine, where she served as chief resident. In 2020, amidst the height of the COVID pandemic, she received the NYU Patient Experience Award, highlighting her dedication to patient care during challenging times. She further honed her expertise through two fellowships, one in Surgical Pathology at Vanderbilt Medical Center and another in Dermatopathology at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry.
Despite her Canadian roots, Dr. Deerwester has strong ties to San Bernardino as she is married to a native of the area. Her enthusiasm for joining the PDI team is evident, and she looks forward to contributing to the field by sharing her knowledge and passion for teaching. Her research contributions and active participation in regional, national, and international conferences showcase her commitment to advancing dermatology and dermatopathology. As a member of prestigious professional organizations such as the American Society of Dermatopathologists, American Society of Clinical Pathologists, and College of American Pathologists, Dr. Deerwester remains deeply engaged in her field.
